American Society for Indexing
Heartland Chapter
The Heartland Chapter of the American Society for Indexing (ASI),
founded in 1992, was officially recognized in 1994 and serves ASI
members mainly from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Our members
include both beginners and experienced indexers, as well as
indexers in a wide range of specialty areas, such as technical
documents, scholarly works, textbooks, web sites, and legal and medical
materials.
We hold two annual meetings featuring speakers and workshops of interest to indexers. Topics have addressed the craft of indexing, starting and operating an indexing business, marketing, and relations with publishers and editors. Peer review sessions--where we critique one another's indexes--sharpen our skill and efficiency.
Our electronic newsletter is published twice yearly and we host an email list for announcements. Membership is not required for subscription to the email list--anyone may join and receive our announcements. The newsletter normally is sent to members but is available on this website to anyone.
If you need an indexer or would like to become an indexer, our officers and members will be eager to help you get what you need.
Spring 2012 Meeting on “Website Building” and “InDesign Basics”
Heartland Chapter, American Society for Indexing
Saturday, May 12, 2012 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
MCL Township Line Cafeteria in Indianapolis, IN
~ PROGRAM ~
We have an exciting lineup for our Spring meeting. John Bealle and Carol Reed will share skills and ideas for website building, appropriate for beginners as well as experienced tech types. If you don’t already have a website, perhaps now is the time to consider launching one. If your website is already up and running, you may come away with some ideas for improvement and refinement. Next, Judith McConville will present the basics of InDesign. If time permits, Margie Towery will share gems of knowledge gleaned from the National Conference in April. Join us for fun, fellowship, and a ticket to the information highway (or perhaps Speedway)!
Build Your Website with HTML (John Bealle)
In this workshop you will learn to build a website the old-fashioned way, with HTML. This is the basic language of web design. HTML is an extremely simple language with only a handful of commands. Although it is more common now to use design software to build websites, it is entirely reasonable to construct an attractive, functional site with this language. I will begin with the pros and cons of having an indexer website for your business. Then we'll start in on a real design, beginning with a blank screen and adding elements piece by piece. You should feel free to bring a laptop if you like and follow along―by the end of the workshop you'll have your own webpage designed and ready to promote your indexing business.
Design Your Website with Website Builder Software (Carol Reed)
In this segment, we’ll look at a lower-tech approach to building a website using a drag-and-drop website builder. We’ll see what you can do with pre-designed website templates and how you can customize them with a basic understanding of HTML. We’ll also cover some basic design and usability issues that can make any website more effective.
InDesign Basics - An Overview for Indexers (Judith McConville)
InDesign is a professional design and layout tool for producing high quality documents for print and on-screen delivery. You may have heard about creating embedded indexes with InDesign and wondered if this is a skill you should acquire. Heartland's Spring meeting will include a short presentation that demonstrates the basics of indexing in InDesign and helps indexers deal with the hurdles of getting started.
Note change of meeting location:
We will be meeting at the MCL Township Line Cafeteria at 2370 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46260. The cafeteria opens at 11 a.m., but we are able to start our meeting at 9:00.
